There's a lot more to Romeo and Juliet than I thought there would be. I always just thought of it as a love story. Shakespeare really goes in depth, and you really have to delve deep into every line of his play to really understand it well. It is a bit annoying, and the language is very archaic, but it is Shakespeare, so that's ok.
I didn't expect some of the comedy in the play. I also didn't expect the Nurse's behavior to be that way, and some of the sexual humor to be in it because I thought that the English in that time period would've frowned upon things like that.
I'm not sure about the love-at-first sight thing. I think that most of the time, you probably just like someone because of the way that they look. Romeo did seem a little lost, and he just sort of goes with the flow, at least so far. He doesn't really seem to be "balance-minded," if that's a word. One minute he's madly "in love" with Rosaline; the next, he would rather die than not be with Juliet.
It helps that we talk about what Shakespeare means in class because if we didn't, I would probably miss all of the things in Shakespeare that are important.
